World Vision Australia (WVA) has been working with Martu People in the Western Desert Communities since 2009. The organisation has a regional office in Newman from which staff travel out to Jigalong, Parnngurr and Punmu to stay for periods of up to a week every fortnight.
WVA's work in the East Pilbara region consists of two key projects: the Pilbara Early Childhood Care and Development Project, and the Martu Leadership Program - which is run in partnership with local organisation Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ)
WVA's work involves building strong partnerships where Indigenous communities invite them to share World Vison's development expertise with them and work together. The organisation supports communities as they draw on their strengths and capacity to overcome disadvantage and raise strong, healthy and happy children.
In addition to its work in the Western Desert, WVA implements community development projects in the remote Warlpiri region of the Northern Territory and also in the urban outskirts of Sydney.
It is through strong partnerships, community voices and local solutions for the local needs, rather than a one-size fits all approach that WVA aims to achieve positive and lasting change.
